This 90-page, full color, spiral bound edition is the story of building the Northern Montana Line, the most successful branch of the 1,418-mile Pacific Extension.
Early in the 20th Century, the Milwaukee began its Pacific
Coast Extension to obtain a share of the traffic coming from Asia.
However, due to good weather and soil, they also extended lines into
Northern Montana to obtain the wheat, sheep and cattle that were
successfully being raised in the area. The eventual goal was to connect
to the main line again around Missoula, and perhaps to eventually head north to
connect with the Canadian Pacific Railway to also obtain the produce of the
Canadian prairies. This book provides a light history of its purpose, and
issues that affected its existence.
